Olen’s 5 Favorite Things (today)

1. Balloons
2. Dogs
3. The grocery carts at Harris Teeter because he can sit behind the steering wheel.
4. Starring at and talking to his shadow while he’s in the stroller
5. Any food that Rog or I have in our hands.

Happy Anniversary, Roger!
I love you!!

“Genuine inloveness is a foretaste of eternity” – Sheldon Vanauken
“….He has set eternity in their hearts.” – Ecc. 3:11

“Although the fig tree blossom not,
And all the vines of our small plot
Be barren, and the olive fail,
The sheep grow weak and heifers frail,
We will rejoice in God, my love,
And take our pleasures from above;
The Lord, our God, shall be our strength
And give us life, whatever length
On earth He please, and make our feet
Like mountain deer, to rise and cleat
The narrow path for man and wife
That rises steep and leads to life.”

Roger’s family visited us for the holiday weekend. It was so nice to get to spend a few days with them. Olen certainly enjoyed all the attention. We can’t wait until they come back again!

We just returned from a week-long vaction in San Antonio. Rog had to present at a convention, which was a convenient excuse to visit my dad’s side of the family that lives there.  Fortunately, Ang, Hannah and Dad were able to join us.  It was so nice to be with family that we so rarely see. Olen, of course, enjoyed all the attention, but he mostly enjoyed playing with Hannah. Here are some highlights:

We finally gave Olen a haircut on Tuesday. He was really still, at first, but he soon decided that he wanted to eat the clippers.

On Saturday, I drove my six-and-a-half month old son to his grandfather’s funeral. Roger’s dad has battled cancer for a year. Finally,  two weeks ago, his body succumbed to its final enemy. For the 25 minutes that it took us to get to the church, I mourned that Olen would taste the horror of this world at such a young age. Babies aren’t supposed to attend funerals! Adults aren’t supposed to attend funerals. Death is unnatural; we were created for life. Death is the wages for our sin and I Corinthians 15 calls it our “last enemy.”
Olen sat quietly, almost reverently, through the two-and-a-half hour funeral service. Of course he didn’t comprehend the gravity of the occassion, but God was merciful in granting him a peaceful disposition.
Roger is walking through this shadow of death with great courage and hope. We have been overwhelmed by encouraging words of friends, timely phone calls, thoughtful cards and flowers, but most of all by the comforting rod and staff of our faithful Shepherd. This severe mercy is deepening our inward groaning for the redemption of our bodies and heightening our anticipation for the day when our final enemy will be trampled under His feet.
For now, our circle is smaller, but Heaven is sweeter. Olen will continue to go to funerals and we will continue to stumble with friends through spiritual darkness, terminal diseases, addictions, infertility and a lifetime of other afflictions brought about by sin, but one day death will give way to victory! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
